His Majesty King Charles III visited Cambridge Central Mosque on Monday 20 July 2026, where he was welcomed by the distinguished British Muslim scholar Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad, also known as Dr Timothy Winter, together with civic, religious and community representatives.
During the visit, the King praised the quality and care reflected in the mosque’s design and highlighted its contribution both to the Muslim community and to the wider city of Cambridge. He also commended its cooperation with other faith communities.
Opened in 2019, Cambridge Central Mosque is recognised as Europe’s first eco-mosque. Its environmentally responsible design includes solar panels, rainwater harvesting, sustainable timber, natural lighting and ventilation, reflecting the Islamic principle of caring for the Earth.
The visit is also significant for the UK Branch of the World Organisation for Al-Azhar Graduates. Shaykh Muhammad Imdad Hussain Pirzada, Patron of Al-Azhar Alumni UK, attended the mosque’s official opening ceremony on 5 December 2019. On that occasion, Shaykh Pirzada conveyed his congratulations to Shaykh Abdal Hakim Murad and recognised the mosque as a significant achievement for the Muslim community in Cambridge and for British society more widely.
The royal visit further highlights the mosque’s national importance as a centre of worship, scholarship, environmental responsibility and interfaith cooperation.

وخلال الزيارة، أشاد جلالة الملك بجودة تصميم المسجد وما حظي به من عناية واهتمام، مؤكدًا إسهامه المهم في خدمة المجتمع المسلم ومدينة كامبريدج بوجه عام. كما أثنى على تعاون المسجد مع أتباع الديانات الأخرى.
وقد افتُتح مسجد كامبريدج المركزي عام 2019، ويُعد أول مسجد صديق للبيئة في أوروبا. ويشتمل تصميمه المستدام على ألواح للطاقة الشمسية، ونظام لجمع مياه الأمطار، واستخدام الأخشاب المستدامة، والإضاءة والتهوية الطبيعية، بما يعكس المبدأ الإسلامي في رعاية الأرض والمحافظة على البيئة.
وتحمل هذه الزيارة أهمية خاصة لدى فرع المنظمة العالمية لخريجي الأزهر بالمملكة المتحدة، إذ حضر فضيلة الشيخ محمد إمداد حسين بيرزاده، راعي الفرع، حفل الافتتاح الرسمي للمسجد في 5 ديسمبر 2019. وفي تلك المناسبة، قدّم فضيلته التهنئة إلى الشيخ عبد الحكيم مراد، وأشاد بالمسجد بوصفه إنجازًا مهمًا للمجتمع المسلم في كامبريدج وللمجتمع البريطاني بوجه أوسع.
