On Monday 13 July 2026, Mr Bakhtyar H. Pirzada, President of the UK Branch of the World Organisation for Al-Azhar Graduates, attended the UK National Srebrenica Memorial Day Ceremony at Church House, Westminster.
He was accompanied by Imam Abu Baqar Ali of Daar Abdullah Ibn Umar, Bradford, and Imam Haroon Hussain of Masjid Ghausia, Huddersfield.
Held under the theme ‘We Are Here’, the national ceremony remembered the more than 8,000 Bosniak Muslim men and boys murdered in and around Srebrenica in July 1995. It honoured the victims, recognised the courage and resilience of the survivors, and reaffirmed the responsibility of present and future generations to preserve the truth and confront hatred, prejudice and dehumanisation.
The ceremony brought together survivors, members of the British Bosnian community, diplomats, parliamentarians, faith leaders and civic representatives. Addresses were delivered by President Denis Bećirović, Chair of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and President Željko Komšić, Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
During the occasion, Mr Pirzada met Dr Waqar Azmi OBE, Chairman of Remembering Srebrenica UK; Chief Imam Sedin ef. Šahman of the Bosnian Islamic community in the United Kingdom; and the Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan.
The UK Branch of the World Organisation for Al-Azhar Graduates stands in remembrance of the victims of Srebrenica, in solidarity with the survivors and their families, and in support of all efforts to educate society, preserve historical truth and resist hatred and intolerance in all their forms.
