The celebration of the 80th birthday of His Eminence, the Grand Imam, Dr Ahmad al-Tayyeb, Shaykh al-Azhar, is not merely a commemoration of past years, but rather a moment to reflect upon a blessed journey guided by Allah’s grace. A journey that began with a blessed birth and has, over the decades, unfolded into a global mission dedicated to human coexistence, moral clarity, and the preservation of the authentic Islamic path based on moderation and balance.
In every age, Allah Almighty prepares individuals whose destinies become intertwined with the fates of institutions and nations. In our present era, which is witnessing intellectual turmoil, rising Islamophobia, and the misuse of religion, the Muslim community was in dire need of leadership rooted in knowledge, equipped with wisdom, and characterised by moral courage. By Allah’s will, Grand Imam Dr Ahmad al-Tayyeb has proven to be the right Imam for this venerable institution at the right moment in history.
For over a thousand years, Al-Azhar has remained a towering beacon of moderation, balance, and tolerance. It has preserved the intellectual and spiritual heritage of Islam, protected the Muslim community from extremism and deviation, and ensured that the true teachings of Islam—grounded in mercy, justice, and wisdom—remain present and understood by all humanity. Under the leadership of the Grand Imam, this historical role has not only continued but has also acquired a renewed global dimension, becoming more prominent and influential.
The title of this article, “A Blessed Birth and the Path of Human Coexistence,” encapsulates the essence of His Eminence’s leadership. His openness to the wider world has been guided by Islamic principles, far removed from apologies or reactions, but rather a confident presentation of Islam as it truly is: a religion that safeguards human dignity, rejects hatred, condemns blind prejudice, and calls for peaceful coexistence without compromising faith or identity.
Through continuous and constructive dialogue with global faith leaders, policymakers, academics, and civil institutions, the Grand Imam has demonstrated that authentic Islamic scholarship is capable of addressing contemporary issues with depth and integrity. His efforts have shown that Islam does not shy away from engagement with the modern world, but rather guides it through ethical clarity and a sense of human responsibility. In an era when Muslims are often spoken about but not listened to, His Eminence has ensured that Al-Azhar’s voice is heard with wisdom, dignity, and compassion.
A cornerstone of this vision is his leadership of the World Organisation for Al-Azhar Graduates. This initiative reflects his profound awareness of Al-Azhar’s global message. By reconnecting Al-Azhar with its graduates across continents, the Grand Imam has empowered Azhari scholars to serve as ambassadors of moderation and advocates of compassion, confronting extremist ideology with sound reasoning and correcting misconceptions about Islam within their societies.
For us at Jamia Al-Karam in the United Kingdom, this vision holds particular importance. Our close and deep-rooted relationship with Al-Azhar began with academic affiliations in 1999 and was strengthened by the historic visit of the then-President of Al-Azhar University, the late Dr Ahmad Umar Hashim, in 2001. This relationship has grown into a vibrant partnership based on shared values. The establishment of the UK Branch of the World Organisation for Al-Azhar Graduates in 2011 stands as a testament to the Grand Imam’s vision, wisdom, and confidence in institutions committed to the Azhari approach of balance, wisdom, and service to society.
In light of the current global rise in Islamophobia and social divisions, this work is no longer merely academic, but an urgent necessity. Muslim communities, particularly in minority contexts, need guidance that combines fidelity to divine revelation with an informed engagement with contemporary realities. The Azhari approach championed by the Grand Imam provides this balance, preserving faith, encouraging positive civic participation, and emphasising peaceful coexistence.
The leadership of the Grand Imam, Dr Ahmad al-Tayyeb, reminds us that moderation is not weakness, coexistence is not compromise, and dialogue is not dilution of faith. Rather, these are expressions of strength rooted in knowledge, supported by sound evidence, and grounded in trust in Allah Almighty. This model of leadership calls upon the Islamic world to reconnect with the methodology of Al-Azhar in addressing the complexities of the modern age.
As we mark this blessed occasion, we pray that Allah Almighty grants His Eminence a long life, blesses his knowledge, bestows continued health and wellbeing, guides him to sound judgement, and preserves Al-Azhar—under his wise leadership—as a beacon of guidance for the Muslim community and a source of reassurance for all humanity.
Indeed, from a blessed beginning, a rich legacy has emerged in service of human coexistence—a lasting heritage, by Allah’s permission, passed down through generations for the benefit of the Ummah.
And with Allah Almighty is all success.

إن الاحتفاء بالذكرى الثمانين لميلاد فضيلة الإمام الأكبر الأستاذ الدكتور أحمد الطيب، شيخ الأزهر الشريف، ليس مجرد إحياءٍ لسنواتٍ مضت، وإنما هو وقفة تأمل في مسيرةٍ مباركةٍ مسدَّدةٍ بعناية الله تعالى. مسيرةٌ ابتدأت بميلادٍ طيب، وتحوّلت عبر العقود إلى رسالةٍ عالميةٍ تُعنى بالتعايش الإنساني، والوضوح الأخلاقي، وصون المنهج الإسلامي الأصيل القائم على الوسطية والاعتدال.
وفي كل عصر، يهيئ الله تعالى رجالًا تتشابك أقدارهم مع مصائر المؤسسات والأمم. وفي عصرنا الراهن، الذي يشهد اضطراباتٍ فكرية، وتصاعدًا في ظاهرة الإسلاموفوبيا، وسوء توظيفٍ للدين، كانت الأمة في أمسّ الحاجة إلى قيادةٍ متجذرةٍ في العلم، متسلحةٍ بالحكمة، متصفةٍ بالشجاعة الأخلاقية. وبمشيئة الله تعالى، أثبت فضيلة الإمام الأكبر الدكتور أحمد الطيب أنه الإمام المناسب للمؤسسة العريقة في اللحظة التاريخية المناسبة.
لقد ظل الأزهر الشريف، على مدى أكثر من ألف عام، منارةً شامخةً للاعتدال والتوازن والتسامح. حفظ التراثين العلمي والروحي للإسلام، وصان الأمة من الغلو والانحراف، وضمن بقاء التعاليم الإسلامية الحقة، التي تقوم على الرحمة والعدل والحكمة، حاضرةً ومفهومةً لدى البشرية جمعاء. وفي عهد فضيلة الإمام الأكبر، لم يقتصر هذا الدور التاريخي على الاستمرار والتواصل، بل اكتسب بُعدًا عالميًا متجددًا أكثر حضورًا وأعظم تأثيرًا.
ويجسّد عنوان هذا المقال «الميلاد الطيب والتعايش الإنساني» جوهر قيادة فضيلته؛ فقد جاء انفتاح فضيلة الإمام على العالم منضبطًا بأصول الشريعة، بعيدًا عن الاعتذار أو ردود الأفعال، بل تقديمًا واثقًا للإسلام كما هو في حقيقته: دينٌ يصون كرامة الإنسان، ويرفض الكراهية، وينبذ التعصب الأعمى، ويدعو إلى التعايش السلمي دون تفريطٍ في العقيدة أو الهوية.
ومن خلال حوارٍ بناءٍ مستمر مع القيادات الدينية العالمية، وصنّاع القرار، والمفكرين، والمؤسسات المدنية، أثبت الإمام الأكبر أن العلم الشرعي الأصيل قادر على معالجة قضايا العصر بعمقٍ ونزاهة. وقد أثبتت جهود فضيلته على أرض الواقع أن الإسلام لا يخشى الانخراط مع العالم المعاصر، بل يهديه عبر الوضوح الأخلاقي وتحمل المسؤولية الإنسانية. وفي زمنٍ يُتحدث فيه عن المسلمين كثيرًا دون أن يُستمع إليهم، حرص فضيلته على أن يكون للأزهر صوتٌ مسموع، يتسم بالحكمة والوقار والرحمة.
ومن ركائز هذه الرؤية قيادته لمشروع المنظمة العالمية لخريجي الأزهر، وهو مشروع يعكس وعيه العميق بالرسالة العالمية للأزهر الشريف. فمن خلال إعادة ربط الأزهر بخريجيه في مختلف القارات، مكّن الإمام الأكبر العلماء الأزهريين من أداء دورهم سفراء للاعتدال، ودعاةً للمحبة، يواجهون الفكر المتطرف بالفكر الصحيح، ويصححون الصور المغلوطة عن الإسلام داخل مجتمعاتهم بالصورة الحقيقية التي يريدها الله تعالى لعباده.
أما بالنسبة لنا في جامعة الكرم بالمملكة المتحدة، فإن لهذه الرؤية أهميةً خاصة ومكانةً رفيعة؛ فالعلاقة الوثيقة المتجذرة التي تربطنا بالأزهر الشريف، والتي بدأت بالمعادلات التعليمية عام 1999م، وتوطدت بالزيارة التاريخية التي قام بها رئيس جامعة الأزهر آنذاك، المرحوم الأستاذ الدكتور أحمد عمر هاشم، عام 2001م، جعلت من هذه العلاقة شراكةً حيةً مثمرةً قائمةً على القيم المشتركة. وقد جاء تأسيس فرع المنظمة العالمية لخريجي الأزهر في المملكة المتحدة عام 2011م شاهدًا على عمق رؤية الإمام الأكبر، وحكمته، وثقته في المؤسسات الملتزمة بالمنهج الأزهري القائم على التوازن، والحكمة، وخدمة المجتمع.
وفي ظل ما يشهده العالم اليوم من تصاعدٍ في مشاعر العداء للإسلام والانقسام الاجتماعي، لم يعد هذا العمل جهدًا أكاديميًا فحسب، بل ضرورةً ملحّة. فالأمة، لا سيما في سياقات الأقليات، بحاجةٍ إلى توجيهٍ يجمع بين الوفاء للوحي، والاستجابة الواعية للواقع. والمنهج الأزهري، الذي يتبناه الإمام الأكبر، يقدّم هذا التوازن الدقيق؛ إذ يحفظ العقيدة، ويُيسّر المشاركة الإيجابية، ويُبرز المسؤولية المدنية، ويؤكد على التعايش السلمي.
إن قيادة الإمام الأكبر الدكتور أحمد الطيب تذكّرنا دائمًا بأن الوسطية ليست ضعفًا، وأن التعايش ليس تنازلًا، وأن الحوار ليس تفريطًا في الدين، بل هي مظاهر قوةٍ نابعةٍ من العلم، مرتكزة على الأدلة الصحيحة، ومعتمدة على الثقة بالله تعالى. وهكذا، فإن هذا النموذج من القيادة الذي يتبناه فضيلة الإمام يؤكد على دعوة العالم الإسلامي إلى إعادة الارتباط بمنهج الأزهر في مواجهة تعقيدات العصر الحديث.
ونحن إذ نحيّي هذه المناسبة المباركة، نسأل الله تعالى أن يمدّ في عمر فضيلته، ويبارك في علمه، ويمنحه دوام الصحة والعافية، ويكتب له سداد الرأي، وأن يبقى الأزهر الشريف، في ظل قيادته الرشيدة، منارة هدايةٍ للأمة، ومصدر طمأنينةٍ للإنسانية جمعاء.
حقًا، من ميلادٍ طيب نشأت مسيرةٌ حافلةٌ في خدمة التعايش الإنساني؛ إرثٌ باقٍ، بإذن الله تعالى، تتناقله الأجيال، وتنتفع به الأمة.
