Statement on the International Day of Al-Azhar – 7th Ramadan 1446 AH

The International Day of Al-Azhar is being held on 7th Ramadan 1446 AH, marking 1085 years of uninterrupted scholarship and Islamic learning since the establishment of the Al-Azhar Mosque and this historic seat of knowledge on the 7th of Ramadan, 361 AH (972 CE) in Cairo, Egypt.

As the oldest continuously operating centre of education in the world, Al-Azhar has remained a beacon of guidance, a reference of knowledge, and a source of intellectual and spiritual leadership for over a millennium. It has been the home of countless scholars and specialists in the sacred sciences, shaping the course of Islamic thought and upholding the principles of wisdom, moderation, and authentic tradition. In today’s world, Al-Azhar continues to stand firm against the challenges of extremism, division, and misunderstanding, advocating for a balanced and enlightened approach rooted in the noble teachings of Islam.

On this significant occasion, Al-Azhar Alumni UK, as the UK Branch of the World Organization for Al-Azhar Graduates, extends its warmest greetings and appreciation to the Grand Imam, Dr Ahmad al-Tayyeb Shaykh al-Azhar, and to Muslims worldwide. We honour the enduring legacy of Al-Azhar and reaffirm our unwavering support for the Grand Imam’s efforts in guiding and nurturing this historic institution, which continues to serve as a lighthouse of knowledge, unity, and peace in our challenging times.

May Allah Almighty continue to protect and bless Al-Azhar Al-Sharif—as a mosque, a university, an institution, and a movement—and may it remain a source of light and wisdom for generations to come.
