Report: Al-Azhar exhibition stand at the 56th Cairo International Book Fair

The Al-Azhar Exhibition Stand at the Cairo International Book Fair, held over the past two weeks, stood out as a vibrant and multifaceted showcase of centuries of scholarship, cultural heritage, and educational contributions by one of the most esteemed Islamic institutions in the world. As the largest book fair in the Middle East, the Cairo International Book Fair attracts publishers and institutions from across the globe, providing a dynamic platform for intellectual exchange and cultural celebration.

UNIQUE AND EXPANSIVE PRESENCE
Situated in a distinct and expansive section of the fair, the Al-Azhar Stand highlighted both its historical and contemporary roles. The exhibition was meticulously curated to provide a journey through the intellectual legacy of Al-Azhar, from its founding during the Fatimid period through successive eras, including the Ayyubid and Ottoman periods, up to the modern day.

The exhibition featured a dedicated theatre-style room with a stage where presentations and panel discussions were held. These events brought together high-profile figures, esteemed scholars, and thought leaders from Al-Azhar University. The participatory nature of the sessions encouraged meaningful dialogue on contemporary issues and reaffirmed Al-Azhar’s ongoing contributions to education and intellectual as well as interfaith discourse.

DIVERSE SECTIONS AND INTERACTIVE ENGAGEMENT
A key highlight was the exhibition’s focus on engaging younger audiences. A thoughtfully designed children’s section offered interactive activities, arts and crafts, and storytelling sessions, fostering a love for learning and an appreciation of Islamic heritage. This section also showcased creative publications and educational materials, including books where children posed questions to the Grand Imam, Dr Ahmad al-Tayyeb Shaykh al-Azhar, and received insightful responses tailored to their understanding.

The manuscript display offered visitors a rare glimpse into the rich intellectual history preserved within Al-Azhar’s archives. Historic artefacts and manuscripts spanning centuries were exhibited, underscoring the institution’s role as a guardian of Islamic knowledge.

Additionally, artists demonstrated traditional calligraphy and displayed paintings of Al-Azhar’s historic sites and revered scholars, blending artistic expression with cultural preservation. A large bookstore featured publications from distinguished Al-Azhar scholars, catering to the interests of students, researchers, and the general public alike.

HIGH-PROFILE VISITS
Mr Bakhtyar Pirzada al-Azhari was one of the many guests invited to observe this exhibition, and he made a visit on Sunday, 2nd February 2025. As President of Al-Azhar Alumni UK – the UK Branch of the World Organization for Al-Azhar Graduates, he was given an official tour of the exhibition. He met with organisers, scholars, and artists, gaining valuable insights into the meticulous planning and execution of the exhibit. Following his visit, Mr Bakhtyar Pirzada al-Azhari remarked:

“Visiting the Al-Azhar Exhibition at this year’s Cairo International Book Fair has been an inspiring experience. The exhibition is expansive and offers a fascinating portrayal of Al-Azhar’s remarkable journey over centuries as a cornerstone of Islamic heritage and intellectual growth. At the same time, it underscores the institution’s contemporary relevance and contributions, both nationally and globally. What impressed me most was not only the depth of knowledge presented for scholars, researchers, and students but also the thoughtful efforts to make this knowledge accessible to the wider public, especially children. This reflects Al-Azhar’s wisdom and its deep sense of responsibility towards society. I commend the Grand Imam, Dr Ahmad al-Tayyeb Shaykh al-Azhar, for his visionary leadership and steadfast dedication in guiding this institution through a rapidly evolving world. His efforts have opened new avenues for engagement and learning. I extend my prayers for his good health and continued success, and for Al-Azhar’s enduring role as a beacon of enlightenment and guidance.”

CONCLUSION
The Al-Azhar Exhibition Stand at the 56th Cairo International Book Fair was a remarkable testament to the institution’s enduring legacy and forward-looking vision. It successfully bridged the gap between tradition and modernity, engaging diverse audiences from children to senior scholars. Through its comprehensive programming, interactive displays, and scholarly engagement, the exhibition reaffirmed Al-Azhar’s pivotal role as a beacon of learning and a symbol of intellectual and cultural preservation.
