On Wednesday 21 March 2018, the UK Branch of the World Organization for al-Azhar Graduates held a series of important counter extremism seminars at the Al-Azhar Suite of the Eaton Hall campus in Retford. The seminars were attended by male and female young Muslims with a number of Imams, Friday khutbah lecturers, teachers as well as students of higher Islamic studies.

The seminars focused on a detailed introduction to the important work of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, in particular as regards countering extremism and terrorism through the important initiative of the Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism based in Cairo. The attendees were briefed on Arabic and English websites associated with these efforts.

The seminars featured the launch of the Al-Azhar Observatory’s timely report on the whereabouts of the Daesh (ISIS) fighters following their defeat in Mosul in Iraq and Raqqa in Syria. The report carefully analyzes potential trouble spots around the world and calls for greater vigilance from governments and international organisations. The report is titled ‘Where is Daesh (ISIS)?’

The seminars further included video discussions from the former President of Al-Azhar University, Dr Ibrahim al-Hudhud, on the topic of Takfir leading to violence and the principle of armed defence within the framework of Islam. In addition, the seminars showed a special documentary on the contributions of Dr Ahmad al-Tayyeb during his past 8 years as the Grand Imam of Shaykh of Al-Azhar.
