British Imams Al-Azhar Certified Training Programme

A five-week online training programme for British Imams, mosque teachers, and preachers was delivered in October 2024. This collaborative initiative, organised by the World Organisation for Al-Azhar Graduates (WOAG) and the Al-Azhar International Academy for Training Imams, Preachers, and Fatwa Researchers, featured a diverse range of specialist scholars from Al-Azhar University, Cairo. The course was facilitated by the UK based academic institution Jamia Al-Karam, Retford.
The programme consisted of 20 modules covering the following five themes:
- The Al-Azhar Methodology (المنهج الأزهري)
- Fundamentals of Religion (أصول الدين)
- Atheistic Thought (الفكر الإلحادي)
- The Fiqh of Preaching & Skills of Impact (فقه الدعوة ومهارات التأثير)
- Citizenship & Belonging (المواطنة والإنتماء)
Senior scholars included:
- Shaykh Dr Muhammad Hussain al-Mahrasawi, former President of Al-Azhar University and President of the Al-Azhar International Training Academy.
- Shaykh Dr Ibrahim al-Hudhud, former President of Al-Azhar University.
- Shaykh Dr Mustafa Abu ‘Amarah, Senior Teacher of Hadith in the Faculty of Usul al-Din.
- Shaykh Dr Abdul Fattah al-‘Awari, former Dean of the Faculty of Usul al-Din.
- Shaykh Dr Hassan al-Saghir, Professor of Jurisprudence at the Faculty of Shari’ah and Law, amongst many other scholars.
Such online training programme are part of Al-Azhar’s ongoing commitment to supporting Imams and preachers worldwide. It aims to correct misconceptions about Islam while confronting the intellectual challenges posed by extremist and violent groups. Through its global network of branches of the World Organisation for Al-Azhar Graduates, Al-Azhar continues to play a pivotal role in addressing these pressing issues.
